In Their Words

What they have said, on the record

“I will work to reverse Trump's Medicaid cuts, protect hospitals from closures, and ensure providers can provide life-saving care that conspiracy theorist Robert Kennedy Jr. restricted. Our ability to access quality, affordable health care is non-negotiable, but Congress continues to play politics with people's lives. The health insurance system in our country is a mess. It's expensive, impossible to navigate, and doesn't lead to better health outcomes. We need to pass Medicare for All and deliver the affordable health care people enjoy in nearly every other advanced democracy.”

“Let's call these funding freezes what they really are: political retaliation by the president. We've seen this firsthand in Evanston, especially with the situation at Northwestern University. Congress has a constitutional responsibility to ensure federal funds are distributed as appropriated, not used as political leverage. Yet members continue to look the other way or simply go along with the authoritarianism emanating from the White House. I will not let this continue.”

“The American economy has stopped working for regular people. The corruption, pay-to-play politics, and top-down systems are hurting the American people. Americans need help, and Congress can provide help by lowering housing and child care costs, taking on price gougers, promoting more green energy production, and incentivizing more development, especially near transit. Trump's dangerous budget bill is only making matters worse. Congress must roll back Trump's health care cuts to Medicaid, ACA premium support, and hospitals nationwide. It's also past time we had a national single-payer health system, such as Medicare for All, that provides universal coverage. We have to shift the balance of power away from big corporations and back into the hands of workers. That means raising the minimum wage, protecting workers' right to organize, and ending Trump's tariffs. I'll also fight to restore independence at the FTC and DOJ to make sure we fully enforce our antitrust laws and break up monopolies. In Congress, I'll work every day to bring down costs, raise wages, and make life affordable for everyone, not just those at the very top.”

“ICE, as it exists today, must be abolished. No one should be allowed to commit murder with impunity. The trauma and generational harm inflicted by these "operations" were never about safety. I've been face-to-face with Commander Bovino, and he is not interested in protecting our communities or working with local law enforcement to safely conduct immigration enforcement. He, Kristi Noem, and their goon squad are invading communities to put on a show and normalize the militarization of American cities. ICE must be replaced with a system that prioritizes actual threats. In Congress, I'll fight for an immigration system grounded in decency and the rule of law. I'll support legislation that ensures access to legal representation, creates a real path to citizenship, respects asylum seekers, and bans mass raids - including making schools, churches, health care facilities, and workplaces off limits to enforcement. I am the son of an immigrant, and the grandson of immigrants who fled the horrors of the Holocaust. I know that America was built by immigrants and is stronger because of it. It's time for an immigration policy that recognizes the dignity of all people and the importance of immigrants to our nation's future.”

“Congress must reassert its authority over federal spending and fight for the people whom they've been elected to serve. We need basic restrictions on Trump's federal overreach to limit his ability to act without Congress and to force him to abide by our laws. That includes passing legislation to prevent presidential overreach like illegally withholding approved federal funds, imposing unilateral tariffs, and weaponizing the Department of Justice to attack political opponents. I will support implementing oversight guidelines that apply to any president, regardless of party, including reversing the Supreme Court's decision on unlimited presidential immunity and passing the No Kings Act. Congress has a constitutional responsibility to defend our democracy and defend against attacks, including those coming from within the White House.”

“The Trump administration is attacking our fundamental rights, upending the global economy, and terrorizing communities with armed militias. The economy is broken. Billionaires are using their immense wealth to buy politicians and influence the system in their favor. As a longtime community activist, legislator, and now as mayor, I bring my deep community connections to this race along with a determination to fight for what people need and take on entrenched special interests. I am the only candidate in this race who has effectively fought the Trump regime both in the streets as an activist and in government as mayor.”
